I help authors and creators craft their stories.
When I work with writers, I help them harness the tools to
*identify and remove blocks to creativity and productivity
*help jumpstart ideas
*use the writing process of drafting and revision
*identify and improve issues with their writing so they can be good editors of their own work.
Writing, especially writing of a personal nature, requires bravery and self-belief, and as such, I use a lot of positive reinforcement and encouragement to help writers produce their best work. I draw on my knowledge of what works for writers as they develop their craft, knowledge that has been acquired from research into the writing and composing process and the teaching of writing, as well as 18 years of experience as a teacher.
As an editor, I work on all levels:
*Book coaching – This is the highest level of working with me one-on-one. We will meet biweekly to discuss both your work and your challenges in the writing process. Topics might include getting past writers block, how to get ideas, how to make time to write, as well as feedback on pages in progress.
*Comprehensive critique – 3-5 pages of notes giving feedback on your manuscript, including commentary on structure, writing, and the use of tools like characterization, dialogue, and setting. At this point I make notes on the manuscript, but it is NOT close editing (see below).
*Line editing/copy editing – Suggestions for areas that need rewriting; editing for grammar, syntax, word choice, formatting, and catching any errors (things that grammar checks miss!) as well as any remaining issues I see in the book.
*Proofreading – the final review before publication, this is usually the “last chance” to catch errors
RATES
My rates are in line with published rates at the Editorial Freelancers Association, appropriate for my area and the project. After obtaining details of your project, I can give you a quote. Please email me the basic premise of the story, where you’re at with it, and what you’re looking for. I’m happy to have an initial virtual meeting to get a feel for each other and discuss the project, no obligation.
I have particular knowledge and interest in working on historical fiction, mysteries, fantasy and science fiction, YA, children’s books, and mainstream fiction, but I think telling a good story is at the core of a good book, no matter the genre.
I require a 10% deposit before starting. For comprehensive critiques, I’ll email you the manuscript with my notes and ask for payment, at which time I’ll send you the critique.
For book coaching, a minimum of 3 months commitment is required.
