ABOUT ME . . .
I am an experienced writer and editor with diverse experiences working with aspiring authors, students of all ages, businesses and nonprofits. I am committed to helping others craft impactful messages and stories. I love working both with entrepreneurs and authors, whether it’s helping to build an online brand or help with editing a book to help make it the best it can be.
HIGHLIGHTS:
EDUCATION AND BACKGROUND
When I was a child, I begged my mother to teach me to read before I went to school. I have considered myself a writer ever since my second-grade teacher praised my writing, publishing my first story in a classroom book. I have spent my life devoted to the craft and art of writing.
I earned a BA in English literature from Binghamton University, State University of New York, where I took creative writing workshops and completed a journalism internship. I worked for The Feminist Press at CUNY for several years before leaving to attend graduate school. While there I learned about the book publishing business, and assisted in all aspects of the process, as well as acquiring skills in editorial management, copyediting and proofreading. I completed the Copyediting and Proofreading course offered at NYU’s continuing education division.
After leaving publishing, I earned a PhD in English from University at Albany, State University of New York in 2001. While working on my graduate degree, I explored the links between writing and healing, theories and research on creativity and women’s writing and literature. For my dissertation, I wrote a novel about three young people dealing with the aftermath of a friend’s suicide. One of my advisors was Douglas Glover, author of various books, including the award-winning historical novel Elle. I also wrote and presented papers on effective strategies for the teaching of writing.
My essays and stories have been published in books, journals, and on websites. I have given presentations on various topics, including strategies and theories on the teaching of writing.
As a college instructor for 18 years, I taught many courses in first-year writing, literature, upper-level writing, and creative writing. I worked one on one with students on their writing as a teacher as well as a tutor. In addition, I visited area schools as a visiting writer. I also worked for 2 years as a mentor in a program for students in online classes, where I learned and developed skills in coaching others.
On the business side, I helped my former husband with his retail business, managing accounts in addition to helping with copywriting. I worked with Bartel Communications and the Consulting Alliance, a regional professional nonprofit for networking, assisting with marketing and social media work. I've written and edited e-newsletters, blog posts and articles for various businesses.
